While most people think of sports nutrition as something exclusive to athletes and would-be athletes, the truth is it is a distinct component in the development of a healthy lifestyle.
There is no shortage of information highlighting the value of exercise for health and longevity. However, the nutrition required to maintain and sustain the extra burden placed on the human body during increased bouts of physical strain and exertion require a very different approach to eating. It is a lot more complex than simply getting a the right ratio of protein, carb and fats. Hydration, hormones, sleep and the nervous system are vital pieces of the puzzle, and they are all influenced by diet.
Sports nutrition is one of the greatest areas of misinformation and it can become very easy to be misguided by social media influencers and so-called fitness gurus. To formulate a personalised meal plan that keeps your energy levels high, inflammation low, recovery fast and improvements constant, all the while maintaining strength and motivation, takes informed guidance and a lot of trial and error. Remember, proper nutrition comes before all kinds of training.
Together we will work to establish a flexible, sustainable and long-term plan that will not only help you feel great but also make it an enjoyable experience. This includes adapting a meal and exercise plan to accommodate any dietary needs or restrictions, including allergies, autoimmune issues, medications, lifestyle preferences, budget constraints, time constraints etc.

One of the most overlooked and misunderstood areas of sports nutrition has to do with female specific sports nutrition.
Most people are not aware that almost all studies on sports nutrition and physiology have been done on and adapted to male subjects. Fortunately, I had Dr Stacey Simms as one of my lectures. Dr Simms is an expert in female sports nutrition and the author of the groundbreaking book ROAR: How to Match Your Food and Fitness to Your Unique Female Physiology for Optimum Performance, Great Health, and a Strong, Lean Body for Life. She taught us how to guide our female clients to eat according to their natural hormonal cycles and how to take advantage of this knowledge to maximise performance and outcomes without having to compromise their fertility and their health to reach their fitness goals. This is an area of nutrition that has been neglected for way too long. However, currently there is a global revolution in the science community to improve our understanding of female sports and female nutrition so that we can apply it where it matters most.
